The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).
About the Opportunity:
As a skilled trades professional, you will perform high-quality painting, facility maintenance, and construction remodeling within DES-owned facilities across Thurston County. This role is highly collaborative; you will work alongside carpentry, HVAC, electrical, and grounds teams to execute complex repair projects and facility improvements. Beyond hands-on technical work, you will be responsible for developing accurate project estimates and managing essential administrative functions to ensure projects are completed efficiently and to standard. - Duties
Some of What You’ll Enjoy Doing Includes:
- Prepare and clean surfaces using various manual and power tools, including sanders, scrapers, and power washers, to ensure a professional finish.
- Mix and match custom paint colors using tinting machines and apply undercoats and finish coats to buildings, furnishings, and equipment.
- Perform minor structural repairs on plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood, and masonry surfaces using appropriate fillers and sealants prior to painting.
- Execute precision pavement markings, including striping parking lots, crosswalks, ADA markings, and traffic control symbols.
- Maintain specialized equipment by cleaning and servicing brushes, containers, spray guns, and other application tools to ensure operational readiness.
- Execute diverse facility repairs and construction tasks, including professional drywall installation and finishing, as well as structural repairs to floors, walls, and doors.
- Provide multi-trade technical support by maintaining plumbing and HVAC systems and assisting with the installation of electrical conduit, wiring, and components.
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates for labor and materials required for building maintenance, alterations, and remodeling projects.
- Manage administrative requirements, including accurate timekeeping, contributing to shop reports, and participating in agency and divisional meetings.
- Other duties as needed.
- Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift or move fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to use standard hand and power tools required to accomplish tasks.
OPTION 1- Four (4) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work.
- Full journey-level status in a Painters' Union.
- Journey-level standing as a painter as attested by the completion of a recognized apprenticeship.

- Use of hand and power tools required to accomplish building and grounds maintenance, repairing, and construction work.
- Ability to perform trades related mathematical calculations.
