TITLE: Medical Surgical Technician

JOB OVERVIEW: Provides/assists the direct nursing care of all patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Department of Emergency Services or Critical Care

HOURS OF WORK: Variable

RESPONSIBLE TO: Unit Manager/Supervisor/Charge Nurse/ Registered Nurse

PREREQUISITES:

  1. Completion of an accredited MA and actively pursuing a nursing degree.

  2. BLS certification.

  3. Able to communicate effectively in English.

4. If performing non-waived testing, must provide evidence of High School Diploma/GED Certificate, College Transcript, or license issued by the Washington State Department of Health.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Good interpersonal communication skills in a diverse population.

  2. Demonstrates ability to learn tasks and handle responsibility.

  3. Demonstrates ability to follow direction/instructions.

  4. Demonstrates skill in communication and customer relationships in a diverse population.

  5. Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional developments of all age groups.

  6. Complete HCA certification within 60 days of hire and maintain this certification throughout employment with VMC.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

B. Essential Responsibilities and Competencies

  1. Provide/assist in the direct nursing care (within scope of practice) of all patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

  2. Transport/escort patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or bed, along with all support equipment necessary. i.e. IV pumps, oxygen tanks. Utilizes IV tote safety devices on stretchers and/or obtains appropriate help in difficult transports

  3. Cleans and stocks treatment areas or patient rooms as necessary, requested, or assigned.

  4. Cleans all used instruments and equipment before CS pickup.

  5. Restocks supplies and linen in all rooms.

  6. Cleans all equipment, etc.

  7. Assists in keeping work areas, equipment and supplies clean and orderly as outlined by hospital policy.

  8. Clean and stock linen cart, stock blanket warmer.

  9. Clean medicine room refrigerator each month or as requested.

  10. Clean Dirty Utility room and Clean Utility room on each shift.

  11. Clean employee lounge and refrigerator as assigned.

  12. Clean refrigerator and store room when needed, on any shift as assigned.

  13. Each shift; clean assigned stretchers and wheelchairs. If any are missing, check floors and bring back to the department.

  14. Each shift, check BP cuffs, flashlights, suction heads, restraints, etc. in the rooms. If any are missing, replace.

  15. Clean and restock carts specific to the unit; Cast, OD, Burn, Eye, Pelvic, Trauma, Difficult Intubation, Line Cart.

  16. Once a month, clean all cupboards and drawers in all rooms.

  17. Daily - check outdated supplies.

  18. Completed check list and account for supplies/equipment each shift.

  19. Assists with admitting duties as needed including admission documentation. (Specific to unit)

  20. Coordinates daily activities with the charge nurse or zone lead.

ADDENDUM - Medical Surgical Technician

Unit Specific Requirements

  1. Emergency Services

  • Completion of an accredited MA, Emergency Department Technician program, or

CNA (with active Washington State Nursing Assistant - Certified license) and

    • Actively pursuing a nursing degree, or EMT or Paramedic with field experience.

    • EMT or Paramedic must have an active Washington State Registered Nursing Assistant License (RNA) prior to employment.

    • One (1) year experience in a CNA or EMT field recommended.

    1. Critical Care Unit

    • Previous Critical Care experience, required. One (1) year Critical Care experience, preferred.
