The IT/GIS Systems Specialist, Journey in the Elections Department combines an exciting environment with the opportunity to cultivate talents and apply a variety of skills. This hybrid position blends hands on IT support with foundational GIS work to keep King County Elections running smoothly. As part of the TECHGIS Division, you will help ensure our staff—and the public we serve—have reliable technology and accurate spatial data.
In this role, you will provide journey level support across key IT and GIS functions. Responsibilities include delivering day-to-day desktop support for Elections staff, assisting with equipment provisioning for new employees (including our large seasonal workforce), and contributing to GIS data maintenance, mapping tasks, and spatial workflow processes.

- Job Duties
In this hybrid IT/GIS role, you will provide a broad range of journey-level technical and geospatial support, including:
IT Responsibilities
- Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 end-user support for Elections staff including Windows/iOS troubleshooting, peripherals, software, and connectivity issues.
- Support device lifecycle management: inventory tracking, equipment preparation, receiving, testing laptops/printers/scanners/docks, and coordinating replacement cycles.
- Implement and maintain assigned IT systems; diagnose and resolve hardware, software, connectivity, and network support issues, escalating when appropriate.
- Create, modify, and maintain user accounts (Active Directory, VoteWA), support onboarding/offboarding processes, and manage licensing workflows.
- Support device imaging and configuration, including annual laptop imaging and maintaining standard desktop environments.
- Maintain and support A/V and conference room technologies, livestreaming equipment, projectors, screens, and public meeting spaces used for canvassing boards.
- Provide field technology support for Vote Centers, including equipment prep, deployment, onsite/remote troubleshooting, and coordination of supplies.
- Monitor and maintain operational technologies including update cycles, peripheral management, and routine technical maintenance.
- Maintain accurate and easily-referenceable hardware, software and system inventories.
- Document system changes, updates, and procedures.
- Support continuous improvement and modernization efforts of IT applications.
- Other duties as assigned.
GIS Responsibilities
- Support the maintenance of Elections’ spatial datasets, map production, and geographic workflows required for ballot production, precinct updates, and election planning.
- Perform spatial analysis, data QA/QC, geoprocessing, and intermediate-level GIS analysis to support internal customers and Elections program areas.
- Interpret and plot legal descriptions, addressing discrepancies between GIS data and the Election Management System, and maintaining precinct and district layers.
- Produce maps and cartographic displays using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and King County GIS standards for Elections operations and public information needs.
- Support integration of GIS with operational technologies (e.g., Drop Boxes, Vote Center siting, routing, jurisdictional boundaries, field operations) and modernization efforts for GIS-related applications.
- Create and maintain metadata, documentation, runbooks, and training materials for GIS workflows and tools.

- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
The ideal candidate will have (required qualifications):
- Demonstrated skill and experience with end-user IT and/or GIS technical support in a production or operational environment.
- Foundational GIS skills including spatial data maintenance, map production, geoprocessing, and familiarity with ArcGIS Pro or comparable desktop GIS tools.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the planning and implementation of projects that add, modify, or enhance systems, processes, or applications.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; and the ability to follow established procedures and documentation practices.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, communicate clearly with technical and non-technical users, and manage workload under strict deadlines (especially during elections).
It would be great if you also have (preferred qualifications):
- Experience with advanced or enterprise-level GIS tools, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online administration, or deeper spatial data skills.
- Experience in production, operational, or field-based technical support environments (e.g., remote sites, equipment deployment).
- Experience with scripting, automation, or project management supporting IT or GIS workflows.
- Experience working in elections, election technology, government operations, or other high-volume, high-accuracy environments.

Work Schedule: This position is subject to the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. The workweek is typically 40 hours per week, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Candidates are required to be available to work additional hours, typically evenings, during the Election cycle and as needed to support the business or to respond to service issues or failures.
Work Location and Requirements: The Elections team works in a hybrid model, with days in the office as well as telecommuting. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. The primary onsite location for this position is the Elections Building, 919 SW Grady Way, Renton. Travel to work locations throughout King County with limited or no public transportation services is required. A valid Washington State Driver's License is required to operate King County vehicles.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to frequently lift and move up to 40 pounds without assistance and be able to bend, twist, kneel, and work in confined spaces for several hours at a time multiple times per year.
