Join the Internal Safety & Health team as our Occupational Safety & Health Specialist 3! This role is a senior-level safety specialist, specializing in Industrial Hygiene (IH) within the agency. You’ll be responsible for the development, production, and maintenance of agency internal IH policies, programs, and procedures, development and delivery of IH training, planning and execution of IH sampling. You’ll also provide expert level research and analysis of IH data to management and staff.

Duties

Some of what you’ll do:

  • Develop and administer industrial hygiene programs and integrate regulations with the needs of L&I at the enterprise level.
  • Maintain and update industrial hygiene programs to ensure compliance with WISHA, OSHA, and L&I’s internal agency programs and policies.
  • Provide expert technical advice and assistance to management, employees, and other safety professionals on highly complex matters of industrial hygiene
  • Develop written procedures for asbestos, hazard communication, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, confined spaces, silica, and other IH related programs.
  • Conduct exposure assessments for field operations (noise, chemicals, particulates, biological hazards, heat/cold stress).
  • Plan and conduct surveys to identify hazards which employees are exposed to while performing their jobs in the office and in the field; recommend appropriate solutions to eliminate hazardous conditions, situations and/or behaviors.
  • Serve as the industrial hygiene subject matter expert, ensuring programs are current, compliant with regulatory requirements, aligned with industry standards, and effective in practice.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate accident prevention programs, policies, procedures and mechanisms to ensure agency wide compliance with regulatory requirements.


Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education or allied field.

AND

  • Four years of professional experience in occupational safety and health programs.

OR

  • A master’s degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education or allied fields may be substituted for two of the four years of the above professional work experience requirement.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

Note: Driving is a required part of this job. Qualified candidates will need to have a valid drivers’ license.

  • The ability to take action to learn and grow.
  • The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.


Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of employee safety and health administration Including safety and health education and training, adult learning, accident Investigation techniques, facility and jobsite safety inspections, record keeping, safety committee operation, and other services common to employee safety such as hazard exposure and control, and routine analytical procedures; compliance regulations (OSHA/WSHA/RCW/EPA

and WAC).


Ability to:

Interpret safety rules and policy; establish and maintain a safe and healthful working environment within the agency, maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and managers; analyze and resolve a variety of safety and health problems; communicate effectively both orally and in writing to L&I employees; travel within and outside the state of Washington (If needed); work effectively with stakeholders; demonstrate positive interpersonal skills; maintain confidentiality; develop and deliver effective training to diverse audiences.


Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products.



Desired:

  • Current certification as an industrial hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)
  • Working knowledge of IH technical aspects of worker exposures and applicable OSHA and WA State requirements for worker protection.

For this position, telework is permitted part time dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station for this position is Tumwater, Washington.
