WSDOT is seeking an experienced and technically skilled Electrical and Electronic Systems Supervisor (EESS) to serve as a regional subject matter expert within the Southwest Region (SWR), supporting the agency’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation systems. This position will be responsible for planning, scheduling, implementing, and leading the maintenance, repair, installation, and inspection of a wide range of electrical and electronic traffic systems within the state right of way, including traffic signals, lighting, electrical services, and advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as variable message signs, communication networks, cameras, and weather monitoring systems. The EESS will supervise and direct a Signals Crew across multiple locations, ensuring high-quality delivery of work that supports multimodal transportation needs, while coordinating specialized training related to technical systems, commercial driving, and equipment operation. This role requires applying advanced technical knowledge, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards, and maintaining critical infrastructure that supports real-time traffic management and public safety.What to Expect
This position performs work primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and often next to live traffic. May work out of bucket truck to heights up to 125 feet, over live traffic or above water on bridges; includes electrical work up to 480 VAC.Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist Supervisor will:
- Supervise SWR Signal Crew in the work operations to maintain, repair, and install traffic signal control systems, illumination systems ITS systems.
- Assess staff training needs, provide or arrange for necessary staff training including periodic safety and training meetings.
- Repair ITS equipment, illumination systems, and signal systems.
- Repair signal and pedestrian signal head outages; locate damaged JBs, conduit, cables and loops; make approved repairs.
- Troubleshoot and repair equipment and circuit problems employing various pieces of common electrical and electronic test equipment.
- Diagnose electrical problems in control systems.
- Construct new illumination systems traffic signals, variable message signs, traffic cameras, road & weather information systems, highway advisory radios, flashing beacons and school zone advisory equipment.
- Operate tools and equipment such as excavator, backhoe, bucket trucks, booms, cranes, hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment.
- Review contracts plans.
- Ensure that all work performed by crew follows all specifications and work standards.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:- Supervisory Leadership: Proven ability to lead, mentor and evaluate a diverse workforce, providing clear direction and sound decision-making under stressful conditions, including planning and scheduling work activities.
- Technical Troubleshooting and Repair: Proficient in diagnosing, repairing and installing various traffic signals or ITS. Demonstrated ability to interpret contract plans and blueprints for use in the field.
- Installation and Construction: Thorough understanding of work zone traffic control and NEC codes and requirements. Working knowledge of serial and Ethernet communications configuration within Windows operating system. Thorough understanding of traffic signals timing and detection configuration.
- Administrative and Project Coordination: Skills to review contract plans to verify traffic devices that can be constructed, provide recommendations for design, signal, traffic operations, and construction engineers. Skilled in maintaining accurate records, managing inventory and procurement of parts and equipment.
- Safety Awareness and Leadership: Experience prioritizing and promoting a safety-first culture, strong knowledge of workplace safety standards, with consistently applied safe work practices.
- Effective Communication: Skills to prepare clear written correspondence and reports.
- Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
- Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.
The following qualifications are also required:
- Class A or B no restrictions CDL, for standard shift and automatic shift vehicles or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Ability to move freely and navigate climbing stairs, ladders, inclines, uneven surfaces, and heights exceeding 100 feet over live traffic or above water on bridges.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to distinguish colors for electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
- Ability to work after hours at night and weekends for scheduled and emergency situations.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Supervision & Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and develop crew members, including assigning work, monitoring performance, and fostering a safe, collaborative, and productive work environment.
- Electrical & Electronic Systems Experience: Demonstrated experience performing installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of electrical and electronic transportation systems, such as traffic signals, lighting, and ITS.
In addition to the preferred competencies above, the following are also preferred:
- A valid flagger certification and demonstrated ability to apply traffic control and work zone safety practices in operational settings.
- A valid journeyman-level electrician license (EL01) or equivalent (AD01 or ME01), with the ability to apply electrical codes, standards, and best practices to installation, maintenance, and repair activities.
- An IMSA certification as a Traffic Signal Technician and Traffic Signal Electronics Technician, demonstrating expertise in traffic signal systems installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
